First Photo of the Forth Bridge, Signed & Dated by Designer

Is this the first ever photograph of the Forth Bridge?

Taken eight years before its completion, and signed and dated by the designer Sir Benjamin Baker in May 1882, it is a photograph of the model he used to demonstrate his amazing, innovative design to a specially appointed parliamentary committee. They were impressed, as we all know, and the rest is history - it has become one of the most iconic structures in the world.

And that's not all... on the back of the photo is a pencil sketch, presumably in Baker's hand, demonstrating the theory of the cantilever principle. You can even imagine him drawing it for the Prime Minister. Absolutely amazing.

I am thrilled to have purchased this, and I'll be devastated when I sell it - a sentiment the bank manager just won't understand!

Book Signing and Readings from KEEPER OF LOST THINGS January 28th

It's not often that a first novel causes such a stir internationally, but Bedford can be rightly proud of the achievements of its own Ruth Hogan, whose novel The Keeper of Lost Things is to published this Thursday. It has already been snapped up by publishers across the world and translated into 20 languages. Reviewers from Kirsty Wark (BBC journalist and writer) to Wendy Holden of the Daily Mail ('if another as good comes along in the next 12 months, I'll eat my special gold reviewing spectacles') have been singing its praises.

We are delighted at The Eagle Bookshop to be hosting readings and book signings by Ruth next Saturday (28th) at 10am, 12.30pm and 3pm. Come and meet the author, see the 'Keeper' window display she has put together and treat yourself to one of the most delightful books you are likely to read!

Not surprisingly, there is a bit of a theme to our anniversary window.

We would be delighted to see our friends, supporters and customers on 'Silver Saturday', if able to make it. We plan to be festive from 10 in the morning, rounding off the day at 6pm with some appropriately themed poems in the garden (thanks to our friends at Swan Theatre in Bedford.)

At least 20% discount will be offered on all books and ephemera on the day, with trade deals possible as well.

You are very welcome to join us on Saturday 3rd September as we celebrate 25 years of The Eagle Bookshop.

We are offering a minimum of 20% discount on all our books on the day, whether it's a bargain 'one-pounder' from the popular Sale Room or a rare item from one of the display cabinets. Dealers are very welcome - we can be even more generous with trade deals.

For local customers, we will have some very tempting special items of rare Bedfordshire history.

Expect competitions and a bit of a party atmosphere as well.
