Description
Folio (39cm x 30cm x 4cm), engraved title, 115 etched or engraved plates of architectural and monumental remains (including the original decorative title design from the 1812 [1816] 1st edition).
The advertisement leaf and the list of plates form the only letterpress in the work - it's essentially a portfolio. This was apparently to avoid Fisher having to deposit costly copies to the principal libraries in accordance with the 1814 Copyright Act.
An ex-libraray copy, but with very few stamps (see condition report). Quarter leather over green, pebbled cloth (contemporary, possibly original), rebacked with original spine laid on.
Fisher spent long periods in the county, preparing 95 of his drawings between 1812 and 1816 when the first edition was published. In addition to the extra copper plaes that appear in this 2nd edition, printed by Nichols, he also printed 50 lithographs himself in 1828 under the title 'Monumental Remains'.
Condition
Ex library: oval stamp to title and three of the plates. Small, light water stain to upper margin of the first 30 or so plates. Occasional light foxing, worst to the two title pages.
